9. View from the cliffs of Crown Butte

There are other buttes (laccoliths) in the area east of Great Falls (not seen here). One of those has also been named "Square Butte". Volcanism played a major role in shaping the land in this area. The Highwood Mountains east of Great Falls, as well as most of the other mountain ranges in central Montana owe their existence to volcanic activity.
