A paleontologist works under the
watchful eyes of visitors. The map on the wall
(behind the spectators) shows the origin of
the ash cloud . . . a volcano that erupted in
Idaho 12.5 million years
ago. As the fossils are uncovered they
are left for public viewing. The presence of
turtles and diatoms provide proof that water
stood in the depression where the rhinos and
other animals laid down to die.
